Heritage and Historical Significance of Alibaug

One of the most appealing things about Mumbai is its connectivity to weekend getaways all around. From Goa and Pune to Lavasa and Alibaugh, Mumbai city has the luxury of proximity to such locations. Alibaugh—a coastal town fringed with pristine beaches and marked by historical sites; it is one of the most preferred destinations for a quick holiday. Previously known as Kolaba pertaining to its popular Kolaba fort built by Shivaji, this maritime town has a strong heritage link attached to it. With its history of Maratha Empire and the invasion of Portuguese culture, Alibaug offers to us more than just beaches and greenery.

Aptly named as Alibaugh after Ali, a rich Jew gardener, this town brims with historical richness that evidently reflects in its archaic edifices and infrastructure. Establishments like the Kolaba fort that stands proudly in the Arabian Sea, 2 kms away from the shore and the Khanderi fort are some sites that are worth a visit. Built by Shivaji, Kolaba fort lives now for about 300 years, still attracting visitors, while Khanderi fort constructed by Shivaji again, flaunts a lighthouse and an old chapel as its prime landmarks. The Revdanda fort, built in a traditional Portuguese aesthetic is also one of the most fascinating places to see in Alibaugh. Adjoining the fort is the black sand Revdanda beach that is partly responsible for augmenting its beauty.

With a heavy amalgamation of Maratha and Portugal influence in its past, the existing cultural blend shows in the local life of Alibaug along with its prominent infrastructure. They say this cultural fusion of the naval town can only be truly felt when you reside amongst the locals while also maintaining distance from the hustle. For this very purpose, we are soon passing on the Isprava experience to Alibaugh with our luxury villas; a promising experience indeed!
